Chapter 7 - THE PAPERS BY THE BED

Four days after surgery, Marcus placed documents beside Lillian’s bed.

“Just signatures.”

She read the first page.

Home-equity application.

Again.

Her eyes hardened.

Marcus said:

“We’re not drawing anything immediately.”

She shook her head.

“Lillian, be rational.”

She pointed to the door.

He laughed.

“You’re throwing me out of my own bedroom?”

She wrote:

NO LOAN.

Marcus leaned closer.

“You don’t understand what happens if my company runs out of cash.”

She typed:

YOUR COMPANY IS NOT MY HOUSE.

His face changed.

For a second, the mask dropped.

Then he collected the papers.

“Fine.”

The next morning, he told the twins:

“Your mother is making decisions while she’s medicated.”

Noah answered:

“She said no before surgery too.”

Marcus stared at him.

That was the first time Noah became a problem in Marcus’s mind.
