Chapter 7 - THE PAPERS BY THE BED

Four days after surgery, Marcus placed documents beside Lillian’s bed.
“Just signatures.”
She read the first page.
Home-equity application.
Again.
Her eyes hardened.
Marcus said:
“We’re not drawing anything immediately.”
She shook her head.
“Lillian, be rational.”
She pointed to the door.
He laughed.
“You’re throwing me out of my own bedroom?”
She wrote:
NO LOAN.
Marcus leaned closer.
“You don’t understand what happens if my company runs out of cash.”
She typed:
YOUR COMPANY IS NOT MY HOUSE.
His face changed.
For a second, the mask dropped.
Then he collected the papers.
“Fine.”
The next morning, he told the twins:
“Your mother is making decisions while she’s medicated.”
Noah answered:
“She said no before surgery too.”
