Chapter 14 - THE BUSINESS ETHAN FINALLY BUILT SMALL

Two years after the fraud case, Moore Property Solutions no longer existed.

The restructured lenders sold remaining operations.

Ethan could have fought.

Instead, he started over.

Small construction management firm.

Three employees.

No family loans.

No Diane bookkeeping.

Rachel learned through Caleb.

Strange network.

Ethan called his new company:

Northline Projects.

No Moore name.

Diane hated that.

Of course.

Then Ethan asked Rachel to review a lobby design for one project.

Paid consultation.

Rachel hesitated.

Then said yes.

Contract first.

Everything written.

He laughed when she sent it.

“Twenty pages?”

“Recognition technology.”

He signed.

Work was easy.

Professional.

Maybe that was the relationship they should always have had.

After project completion, Ethan paid on time.

Rachel texted:

MIRACLES HAPPEN.

He replied:

LEGAL COUNSEL DEMANDED IT.

She smiled.

Then Ethan told her Diane had entered therapy voluntarily.

Rachel almost dropped her phone.

“Why?”

“She said probation therapy was insulting because it assumed she was the problem.”

“And voluntary therapy?”

“She chose the therapist, so apparently that makes accountability tasteful.”

Rachel laughed.

People changed in their own ridiculous ways.

Then Diane sold one of Moore Strategic’s properties to finish restitution early.

Not the house Melissa lived in.

Good.

The final payment arrived in Rachel’s account.

She stared.

Money returned.

Time not.

Marriage not.

Trust not.

Still.

Accounting complete.

She transferred part of the restitution into a retirement account.

Used some to repair her father’s building.

Donated none.

That surprised people when they heard.

Rachel did not need to turn harm into philanthropy.

Sometimes money could simply go back to the person it was taken from.

Then Claire sent her the final closed-case letter.

Financial fraud matter resolved.

Civil claims dismissed under settlement.

No liens remaining.

Rachel printed it.

Put it in a drawer with the forged guarantee.

Not framed.

Not worshiped.

Evidence.

Then she found the anniversary card Ethan had used as emotional proof:

WE’RE A TEAM. WHAT’S MINE IS YOURS.

She stared.

Then wrote underneath:

ONLY WHEN I SAY SO.

May you like

She laughed.

Kept that too.
