Chapter 11 - WHAT LIES BENEATH

It was not natural gas.
At least, not primarily.
Grant Blake had discovered environmental contamination beneath the southern tract.
Thirty years earlier, an industrial contractor had illegally buried chemical waste there.
If publicly confirmed, cleanup costs could exceed forty million dollars.
Ownership meant liability.
Emily stared at the environmental report.
“So you weren’t trying to steal valuable land.”
Madison sat across from her.
“We were trying to control a disaster.”
“By putting it in my name?”
Madison did not answer.
Emily laughed.
“That’s what this was.”
Grant had wanted full control of the tract so Blake Development could quietly remediate it before regulators discovered the contamination.
But when financing collapsed, the strategy changed.
Shift liability.
Use Emily’s signatures.
Close before the trust transferred fully at the baby’s birth.
Ryan looked sick.
“You knew?”
Madison said, “I learned six months ago.”
“That was when we started sleeping together.”
“Yes.”
Ryan stared.
“You used me.”
Madison smiled bitterly.
“Now you know how Emily feels.”
Emily did not enjoy watching him receive the lesson.
She was too angry.
“You were going to leave my child with contaminated land and millions in liability.”
Madison’s expression hardened.
“My family did not bury the waste.”
“Neither did my baby.”
“No.”
For once, Madison had no counterargument.
Grant arrived with attorneys.
He denied knowledge of the contamination.
Emily played a recording from the second device.
Grant’s own voice from twelve years earlier discussed soil samples.
His attorney stopped him from speaking.
The room changed.
For the first time, Grant looked afraid.
But he still had one card.
He placed a DNA report on the table.
Emily frowned.
“What is this?”
Grant said, “The trust transfers to your first living child.”
“Yes.”
“Assuming the child is legally a Calloway heir.”
Ryan stood.
“What the hell does that mean?”
Grant looked at Emily.
“The trust language contains a bloodline provision.”
Emily stared.
“So?”
Grant slid the report closer.
“I suggest you ask Ryan why he secretly ordered a prenatal paternity test.”
May you like
Emily slowly turned toward her husband.
Ryan’s face told her the report was real.
