Chapter 6 - THE BABY CLAUSE

Emily read the message three times.

The baby is.

She called Arthur.

He arrived with Sheriff Daniel Ross.

Ross photographed the house.

“No forced entry.”

Emily looked at him.

“Ryan has a key.”

“So does Arthur,” Ross said.

Arthur nodded.

“Old estate key.”

Emily looked at both men.

Trust had become expensive.

After the sheriff left, Arthur searched his files.

At midnight, he found it.

A trust amendment dated 1997.

Emily’s grandmother had created a dormant family trust tied to mineral rights.

The beneficiary clause was unusual.

Ownership transferred fully to Emily only upon the birth of her first living child.

Until then, Emily held residential rights but not complete control of the mineral estate.

Emily stared.

“So the land becomes mine when the baby is born?”

“The trust interest does.”

Ryan arrived after Emily called him.

He read the document.

Then sat down.

“Oh, God.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“Madison knew.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“She kept asking when you were due.”

Emily felt cold.

Ryan continued.

“She said timing mattered because financing had to close before September.”

Before the baby.

Arthur understood.

“If they complete the land transfer before the birth, they can argue the trust asset was already encumbered.”

Emily looked at Ryan.

“You knew they were rushing.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t know why.”

“No.”

Emily wanted to believe him.

That made her distrust herself.

The next morning, Madison requested a meeting.

Public place.

Lawyers present.

Emily agreed.

Madison arrived with Grant Blake.

Her father was sixty-two, immaculate, controlled.

He looked at Emily’s stomach and smiled politely.

“Congratulations.”

Emily did not return it.

Madison placed a document on the table.

“The trust amendment is invalid.”

Arthur frowned.

“On what basis?”

Grant answered.

“Emily’s grandmother lacked full title when she created it.”

He produced a deed dated 1991.

It showed fifty-one percent ownership of the mineral estate transferred to Blake Holdings.

Arthur stared.

“I’ve never seen this.”

Grant smiled.

“That doesn’t make it nonexistent.”

Emily examined the signature.

Her grandmother’s.

Madison leaned back.

“You think this is a story about a rich woman stealing from a poor pregnant wife.”

Emily looked at her.

Madison continued.

“It isn’t.”

“What is it?”

“My family taking back what yours stole first.”

Emily held up the recorder.

“And forging my signature?”

Madison’s expression hardened.

“If Ryan forged something, prosecute Ryan.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You told me the paperwork was legal.”

“I told you our claim was legal.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Madison did not flinch.

Emily realized Madison was separating herself from Ryan.

Preparing to sacrifice him.

Then Grant slid another document across the table.

A notarized affidavit.

Signed by Emily’s grandmother one month before her death.

It stated that Emily Calloway had no legal claim to the southern mineral tract.

Emily stared at Arthur.

He whispered:

“That signature is real.”
