Eleanor filed for divorce.
The mansion was marital property.
Not secretly hers.
Not secretly Charles’s.
They had purchased it together before the accident.
The settlement funds were treated separately according to their legal characterization and tracing.
Some compensation categories remained Eleanor’s separate property.
Other financial issues required analysis.
The divorce did not turn on one dramatic rule.
Lawyers traced:

house adaptations,
joint spending,
Charles’s hotel investment,
and ordinary marital assets.
The Santa Fe project eventually opened.
Late.
Over budget.
But open.
Charles did not lose everything.
He sold part of his interest to raise cash.
The hotel survived.

That outcome irritated Vanessa more than anyone.
She had imagined Eleanor’s refusal would destroy Charles.
It did not.
It simply forced him to solve his business problem without using Eleanor’s future medical money.
The divorce forensic accountant separated the settlement categories carefully.
Compensation for future medical care.
Lost earning capacity.
Pain and suffering.
Property damage.
Amounts already commingled.
Amounts still traceable.

Melissa refused to turn the story into:
accident money is automatically untouchable.
Reality was more technical.
Eleanor appreciated that.
