Chapter 9 - WHAT VANESSA KNEW
Vanessa claimed she knew nothing about the annuity.
Not true.
She knew some.
Charles had told her:
“Eleanor has structured money sitting uselessly.”
Vanessa asked:
“How much?”
“Enough to finish Santa Fe.”
She replied:
“Then why won’t she help?”
That was the beginning.
Vanessa came to see Eleanor as the obstacle between Charles and success.
A wealthy woman sitting on money.
A disabled wife refusing to move on.
A marriage already dead except on paper.
Vanessa told herself:
Eleanor is punishing him.
Then:
Eleanor is using disability to control him.
Then:
Eleanor is pathetic.
Each story made cruelty easier.
But Vanessa did not submit the settlement inquiry.
Did not access the documents.
Did not talk to the purchaser.
Her wrongdoing in the financial matter was moral participation, not document fraud.
Vanessa’s foyer outburst began over the suitcase.
Eleanor had come to collect clothing and personal files after Melissa advised a temporary separation.
Vanessa was already living in the mansion.
Not legally prohibited.
Emotionally brutal.
Eleanor asked her to move away from the hall closet.
Vanessa refused.
“You don’t live here anymore.”
Eleanor said:
“My name is still on the deed.”
Vanessa laughed.
“So is Charles’s.”
True.
The house was jointly owned.
Eleanor reached for the suitcase.
Vanessa said:
“You drag this out because you like watching him suffer.”
Eleanor answered:
“No. I’m here for my clothes.”
Then Vanessa kicked her.
The violence emerged from entitlement, not a secret plan.
