Chapter 8 - THE GIRL WHO REALIZED SHE WAS USED

Madison cried for the first time in front of Claire.

Not gracefully.

Angrily.

“They knew.”

Claire said nothing.

“They knew I hated you.”

“Yes.”

“They knew you were going to fight with me.”

“Yes.”

Madison looked up.

“Do you think Grandma told me to shove the rag?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Claire continued.

“I think she wanted pressure. You chose the rag.”

Madison’s face twisted.

Fair.

Then Claire said:

“And I chose to grab your hair.”

Neither woman escaped responsibility.

Madison sat on the floor.

“My mom told me this house would always be part of the family.”

“It can be.”

“She said Uncle Mark would protect it.”

“He thought he was.”

“That’s stupid.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Then Madison admitted another fact.

Eleanor promised that if the loan closed and Mark’s company stabilized, Madison would receive a $100,000 early distribution for graduate school or a car.

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“What kind of car?”

Madison looked embarrassed.

“Not relevant.”

“Very relevant.”

“A Porsche.”

Claire laughed despite herself.

Madison almost did too.

Then stopped.

“So she paid me to sign.”

“She offered you a future benefit.”

“That’s the lawyer answer.”

“Fine. Yes.”

Madison looked at the file.

“What happens now?”

“We tell the truth.”

“To the court?”

“To everyone.”

Madison panicked.

“If I admit I knew the fight might help the loan, it makes me look horrible.”

“You shoved a rag into someone’s mouth.”

“I know.”

“Then start there.”

Madison stared.

Claire realized she sounded like Naomi.

Good.

The next morning, Madison gave a supplemental statement.

She admitted Eleanor had told her Claire’s removal could help the financing.

She denied being instructed to provoke violence.

She admitted she chose to confront Claire and began recording because she hoped Claire would “finally explode.”

That hurt Claire.

But it was honest.

Then Madison handed over the post-exclusion file.

Eleanor’s lawyer immediately claimed Madison stole privileged documents.

Possible.

The court sealed them pending review.

Then Charles resigned as family trust counsel.

Too fast.

Naomi looked at Claire.

“Why resign now?”

Because the files exposed him?

Maybe.

Then Charles sent one email before stepping down.

To Mark.

Subject:

WE HAVE A DIFFERENT PROBLEM.

Attachment:

An old property contribution ledger.

One payment:

$95,000.

Contributor:

Olivia Dawson.

Date:

Two years after Olivia’s death.

Madison stared.

“My mother was dead.”

Claire looked at Mark.

May you like

He looked terrified.

Someone had been moving money through the trust under a dead woman’s name.
