Chapter 10 - WARREN’S SECRET

Warren Hart had frozen sperm before prostate surgery six years earlier.

Rowan knew about the surgery.

Not the preservation.

Caroline Vale had handled the legal consent forms.

That fact alone told Lena we were in deeper water.

The sample still existed at a reproductive bank under a trust-controlled storage agreement.

Why would Tessa mention it?

Because it created another route to a Hart heir.

If Caroline could manipulate estate documents and Tessa could manipulate reproductive records, they might not need Rowan at all.

The plan began to look less like seduction and more like succession.

Evan found Warren’s original reproductive directive in old estate files.

It prohibited use of his genetic material after death without written consent from Rowan and Evan jointly.

No such consent existed.

Caroline had still paid storage fees for years through a Vale legal account.

When confronted, she finally agreed to an interview through counsel.

She was colder than Tessa.

More disciplined.

“I preserved options,” she said.

“For who?” Lena asked.

“For the family.”

“Which family?”

Caroline smiled faintly.

That answer was worse than none.

She admitted knowing Tessa accessed Rowan’s executive accounts.

She called it “administrative delegation.”

She admitted helping draft the surrogacy framework.

She claimed it was contingency planning in case Rowan later wanted children but could not conceive.

I laughed out loud at that.

Caroline looked at me.

“You find reproductive planning amusing?”

“I find fraud dressed as planning disgusting.”

Her eyes hardened.

There it was.

The superiority Tessa inherited.

Then Lena played Melissa’s statement about the false infertility report.

Caroline’s face changed.

“I knew nothing about that.”

For the first time, I believed her.

Not because she was innocent.

Because her outrage seemed aimed at Tessa for being sloppy.

Caroline had supported succession planning.

Tessa had escalated it into personal sabotage.

Different sins.

Same ecosystem.

The decisive evidence came from Warren himself.

Evan found an audio memo recorded six months before his death.

Warren’s voice was weak but clear.

Caroline keeps talking about “protecting continuity.” If she ever tries to turn bloodline into a corporate instrument, remove her from every trust role immediately.

Warren had predicted the exact danger.

The board acted fast.

Caroline was removed from all remaining advisory positions.

Tessa’s access to company systems was terminated permanently.

The boys’ trusts were formalized.

But one question remained.

Why had Tessa targeted me before my pregnancy was confirmed?

The answer came from a folder Caroline surrendered as part of the legal review.

Tessa’s private notes.

She had been watching our marriage for almost a year.

She documented our miscarriages.

My clinic appointments.

Rowan’s grief.

His temper.

His fear that he was “broken.”

Then one handwritten line:

If he believes Maren chose a fertile man over him, he will destroy the marriage himself.

I stared at the sentence.

That was the real weapon.

Not the fake report.

Not the photos.

Not the investigator.

Rowan.

His insecurity.

His anger.

His willingness to punish before listening.

Tessa did not invent the thing that destroyed us.

She calculated it.

Then I turned the page.

A second note.

Once she is gone, Rowan will need someone who never makes him feel defective.

May you like

Underneath, one name:

Me.
