Chapter 6 - THE ROAD

I delivered at thirty-six weeks.
Two boys.
Healthy enough to avoid intensive care.
Warren was born first, furious and loud.
Miles arrived three minutes later, quieter, blinking up at the world with Rowan’s pale eyes.
I cried when I saw them.
Not because they looked like him.
Because for the first time in months, two things existed that no one could edit, crop, forge, or reinterpret.
They were real.
I stayed out of public records as long as legally possible, then filed corrected birth information through Lena.
Father: Rowan Hart.
That filing triggered the estate trust mechanism.
Which meant Tessa would eventually know.
Lena prepared a paternity action and a fraud complaint.
Rowan still knew none of it.
Then, one dry afternoon, everything moved faster than planned.
My car broke down forty miles outside Abilene.
The tow truck was delayed.
Phone reception was weak.
The heat was rising.
I strapped both babies securely against my chest in a twin carrier and started walking toward a roadside gas station I could see in the distance.
A black SUV slowed beside me.
I barely looked up at first.
Then the passenger door opened.
Rowan stepped out.
He had not changed much.
Short blond hair.
Fitted black shirt.
Dark trousers.
Tessa emerged from the other side in white.
My body went cold before my mind caught up.
Rowan froze.
“Maren…?”
I stopped walking.
For several seconds nobody moved.
His eyes went from my face to the babies.
One of them turned.
Blond hair.
The other opened his eyes.
Rowan’s expression collapsed.
“Those eyes…”
Tessa spoke quickly.
“We should go.”
Rowan did not hear her.
He took one step closer.
Then another.
His hands began shaking.
I had imagined this moment in a hundred versions.
In none of them did he look this destroyed.
“Are they…”
He couldn’t finish.
I said nothing.
Tessa grabbed his arm.
“Rowan.”
He pulled away from her without looking.
Then he looked directly at me and whispered, “The test said I couldn’t…”
My stomach tightened.
“What test?”
His face changed.
He reached into the SUV and grabbed his phone.
A PDF.
The false infertility report.
“I had a genetic test after we lost the second pregnancy,” he said. “Tessa found it in my medical files. It said I had a chromosomal abnormality. That natural conception was almost impossible.”
I stared at Tessa.
Her face remained composed.
“You believed that over me?” I asked Rowan.
“I believed it with the photographs.”
“The photographs she paid for.”
His head snapped toward Tessa.
She laughed once.
“That’s ridiculous.”
I looked at Rowan.
“Ask her who hired Cole Bennett.”
Tessa went pale.
Rowan saw it.
He stepped back from her.
“Tessa?”
She recovered quickly.
“Maren is trying to manipulate you because she knows what the company shares mean.”
There it was.
She knew exactly what the twins threatened.
Rowan looked back at me.
“How old are they?”
“Three months.”
He did the math.
His face drained further.
Then a silver sedan pulled up behind us.
Lena stepped out.
I had sent her my location when the car broke down. I had not known she was that close.
She walked directly toward Rowan and handed him a sealed envelope.
“Mr. Hart,” she said, “you’ve just been served.”
Rowan opened it.
Petition to establish paternity.
Fraud preservation notice.
Emergency injunction regarding Vale-Hart voting shares.
Tessa whispered, “Don’t sign anything.”
Rowan stared at her.
Then at the babies.
Then at me.
May you like
And finally said the sentence that destroyed whatever control she thought she had left.
“I’m getting a DNA test today.”
