Chapter 13 - PATRICIA'S ABSENCE

Patricia had not been at the dinner.
That mattered because Charlotte initially wanted someone else to blame.
There was no grandmother whispering rules.
No ex-wife manipulating.
No outside villain.
The hierarchy was Zachary’s.
Built from grief.
Law.
Fear.
And his own interpretation of fatherhood.
That made accountability cleaner.
Tristan later asked Charlotte:
“Do you hate Dad?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because hate isn’t required.”
“Do you love him?”
Charlotte thought.
“Part of me probably always will.”
Tristan looked confused.
“Then why divorce him?”
“Because love does not make a home safe.”
Tristan stared at the floor.
He was thirteen.
Old enough to understand the sentence.
Too young to fully carry it.

Charlotte changed the subject.
He deserved childhood too.
