Chapter 2 - THE WORD

Charlotte took Chloe to urgent care.

No serious injury.

A reddened cheek.

No fracture.

No neurological concern.

The pediatrician asked what happened.

Charlotte answered clearly.

“My husband slapped her.”

Not:

He lost his temper.

Not:

There was an argument.

Not:

It got out of hand.

The doctor documented it.

Then asked:

“Is Chloe safe going home?”

Charlotte said:

“No.”

She did not return that night.

Charlotte also had to decide what to tell Chloe’s preschool.

Not:

There are family problems.

Too vague.

Not:

Zachary is dangerous.

Too broad.

She told the director:

“Zachary is not authorized to pick Chloe up. Please call me if he appears.”

The director updated the file.

Simple.

Operational.

Charlotte appreciated how much safer precise instructions felt than emotional labels.

The school did not need the entire marriage story.

It needed to know who could leave with a four-year-old.

She and Chloe stayed with Charlotte’s older sister, Megan.

At midnight, after Chloe finally slept, Charlotte opened her phone.

One word would not leave her mind.

Temporary.

She searched messages.

Zachary had used the word before.

Not about Chloe directly.

Temporary school arrangement.

Temporary room setup.

Temporary preschool pickup.

Charlotte had assumed he meant the blended-family transition.

Now she looked again.

A message to their realtor:

Need a four-bedroom layout, but only three rooms need to be permanent-use bedrooms.

Another:

Tristan gets the upstairs suite. Chloe can use flex room for now.

For now.

Charlotte called Zachary.

“What did you mean when you called Chloe temporary?”

He sighed.

“You’re twisting something Tristan misunderstood.”

“Explain it.”

“We’re talking about the move.”

“What move?”

Silence.

Charlotte sat up.

“What move, Zachary?”

He answered:

May you like

“The Lakewood house.”

Charlotte had never heard of a Lakewood house.
