Chapter 3 - THE TENANT WHO DISAPPEARED LAST YEAR
Lily Monroe had rented Caleb’s apartment before him.
That was the first thing Victor never told him.
Mara found the lease records.
Lily moved in fourteen months earlier.
She worked as a graduate student in architectural preservation.
Six months later, she disappeared.
Victor reported that she broke the lease and moved out without notice.
Her parents filed a missing-person report in Connecticut.
Police checked the apartment.
Nothing suspicious.
Why?
Because the back corridor was still sealed.
Victor told detectives it was structurally unsafe.
No one forced it open.
Lily’s belongings were supposedly removed by a moving company.
But Mrs. Adler remembered otherwise.
“She didn’t leave.”
Mara sat with the older woman in the downstairs apartment.
Caleb listened from the corner.
Mrs. Adler said:
“She came to me two nights before she vanished.”
“What did she say?”
“That the walls didn’t match the building plans.”
Caleb frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Lily studied old architectural drawings as part of her degree.
She noticed the back service corridor should have connected to a rear stairwell and carriage entrance.
But the current hallway ended too early.
Meaning there was missing space.
A hidden section.
She told Mrs. Adler:
“There’s a room behind the wall.”
Then she disappeared.
Victor told everyone she left town.
Mrs. Adler did not believe him.
“Why didn’t you tell police?”
“I did.”
“What happened?”
“They said there was no evidence.”
Then she looked at Mara.
“And Victor told me if I kept making accusations, he’d terminate my lease.”
Caleb’s stomach tightened.

He had moved into a place somebody had already vanished from.
