Chapter 5 - WHY CALEB WAS CHOSEN
Caleb was not selected randomly.
He worked in cybersecurity.
Specifically, digital forensics for a financial compliance company.
Mara asked him:
“Did your application list your employer?”
“Yes.”
“What exactly do you do?”
“I investigate system breaches.”
She looked at the hidden files.
“That may be why you’re here.”
Why would kidnappers want a forensic analyst living upstairs?
The answer came from Lily.
Alive.
Police found her twenty-seven hours later at an abandoned motel outside Worcester.
A traffic camera captured the hooded man’s van.
He had moved her after Caleb opened the corridor.
Lily was dehydrated and terrified.
But stable.
Her first full statement changed the case.
Victor Shaw was not the hooded man.
The hooded man was Daniel Cross.
Thirty-five.
Former private security contractor.
Victor’s employee.
But Victor was involved.
Lily had discovered the hidden rooms.
She also discovered what they were used for.
The building was part of a private blackmail operation.
Tenants were selected for access to useful industries:
finance.
medicine.
law.
technology.
government.
Hidden cameras recorded private conversations.
Personal records were stolen.
Compromising material was collected.
Then pressure began.
Some victims paid.
Some provided access.
Some performed favors.
Lily found the files.
Victor caught her.
Daniel confined her.
Why keep her alive?
Because Lily had copied part of the archive somewhere they could not locate.
They needed the password.
Then Caleb moved in.
Victor believed a cybersecurity specialist might eventually help recover or identify where Lily hid the data.
Without knowing why.
Caleb whispered:
“They moved me in as a tool.”
