Chapter 6 - CALEB FINALLY BREAKS
Caleb held out longer than Mara expected.
That hurt.
He was her younger brother.
The boy she once walked to school.
The man who cried at their father’s funeral.
Now he sat in an interview room with a lawyer and tried to explain why he let police call his bruised mother the aggressor.
Rebecca asked:
“Did your mother attack Vanessa?”
Caleb stared at the table.
“No.”
The room went silent.
His lawyer closed his eyes.
Caleb continued.
“She was angry.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“No.”
“Did Vanessa strike Helen with the bat?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you say otherwise?”
Caleb began crying.
Because Vanessa told him the transfers would look criminal.
Because Grant told him the footage could “be handled.”
Because Caleb had already signed loan documents using part of Helen’s money as proof of liquidity for C&V Property Holdings.
If Helen filed a complaint, his business loan could collapse.
So he panicked.
Rebecca asked:
“Did you help plan the assault?”
“No.”
“Did you know Vanessa intended to hit your mother?”
“No.”
“Did you call Helen to the house?”
“No.”
“Did Vanessa?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Rebecca played an audio clip recovered from Vanessa’s cloud backup.
Vanessa:
She won’t come if I call from my phone.
Unknown male:
Use Caleb’s number.
Caleb’s face collapsed.
He recognized the second voice.
“Uncle Owen.”
