Chapter 10 - WHY DANIEL WALKED AWAY
Daniel explained himself later that day.
Police had been called by a neighbor who heard shouting after Claire threw the basin and screamed.
No one was arrested immediately.
Statements were taken.
The switch was documented.
Claire and the twins were medically checked.
No serious injuries.
Back home, Daniel said:
“I didn’t know what to do.”
Claire stared.
“You could have taken the stick.”
“She’s my mother.”
“They’re your children.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Daniel sat.
Then said something uglier because it was honest.
“I was tired of being the referee.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You weren’t refereeing.”
He looked down.
“You hired your mother to do the parenting you didn’t want to do.”
Daniel flinched.
Claire continued:

“And then when it got ugly, you decided it was between two women.”
He had no answer.
