Chapter 13 - THE SAFETY PLAN
The twins did not enter a dramatic custody battle.
The immediate plan was simpler.
Margaret could not provide unsupervised childcare.
No physical discipline.
No staying in the home.
Daniel had to take actual parenting shifts during Claire’s recovery.
Not “available by phone.”
Present.
He negotiated reduced travel for four weeks.
His employer agreed more easily than he expected.
That embarrassed him.
He had assumed saying:
My wife had surgery and I need family leave adjustments
would damage his reputation.
His manager answered:
“Why didn’t you ask sooner?”
Daniel had no good answer.
He had outsourced the problem before testing whether work would bend.
Claire apologized to the twins too, even though they were too young for a formal conversation.
Not for Margaret’s act.
For being unavailable in ways they could not understand during recovery.
She sat on the floor after her incision healed enough.
Emma climbed into her lap.
Ethan leaned against her shoulder.
Claire said:
“Mommy was hurt. Mommy is getting better.”
Emma touched Claire’s abdomen.
“Owie?”
“Less owie.”
That was enough.
