Chapter 1 - YOU’LL FEEL WHAT YOU MADE MY DAUGHTER FEEL

Claire Morgan knew something was wrong the second she stopped hearing Lily.

Seven-year-olds did not vanish quietly from birthday parties.

Not Lily.

Lily sang when she was nervous.

She hummed when she ate.

She whispered stories to herself while coloring.

And when a room became too loud, she always found Claire and slipped one small hand into hers.

So when Claire stood in the middle of the decorated birthday hall and realized she had not seen her daughter for almost twenty minutes, panic struck hard enough to make the room tilt.

“Aaron.”

Her husband looked up from a conversation near the bar.

“What?”

“Where’s Lily?”

Aaron blinked.

“She was with the kids.”

“No.”

Claire scanned the room.

Pink balloons.

White flowers.

Gift tables.

A long children’s table near the stage.

No Lily.

Margaret, Aaron’s mother, stood beside that table speaking to Vanessa Reed.

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Vanessa.

Thirty.

Blonde.

Perfect makeup.

Too comfortable around Aaron.

Claire had disliked her from the moment Aaron introduced her as an “old family friend.”

Old family friend.

The phrase had aged badly.

Claire had already found two late-night messages.

Nothing explicit enough to prove an affair.

Enough to make her watch.

She crossed the room.

“Margaret, where’s Lily?”

Margaret barely turned.

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa smiled into her champagne.

Claire’s fear sharpened.

“Lily was right here.”

Margaret sighed.

“Then perhaps she wandered.”

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Her smile did not reach her eyes.

Claire’s pulse began to pound.

Then—

faintly—

from somewhere behind the catering doors—

she heard crying.

“Mommy…”

Claire froze.

The sound came again.

Small.

Muffled.

“Mommy!”

Claire ran.

Past the servers.

Past a stack of folded chairs.

Down a short hallway.

A storage-room door stood closed at the end.

Locked.

Claire grabbed the handle.

“LILY!”

“Mommy!”

Her daughter’s scream ripped through her.

Claire kicked the door.

Once.

The latch held.

Again.

The door slammed inward.

Lily sat curled on the floor between boxes of decorations and spare table linens.

Pink dress wrinkled.

Face red from crying.

Hands trembling.

Claire dropped to her knees.

“BABY!”

Lily launched herself into her arms.

Claire wrapped both arms around her.

“I’m here. I’m here.”

“They locked me in.”

Claire went still.

“Who?”

Lily sobbed into her shoulder.

“Grandma Margaret.”

Claire’s whole body changed.

She lifted Lily.

Carried her back into the hall.

The party had quieted.

People were staring.

Margaret remained near the children’s table.

Vanessa beside her.

Aaron was moving toward Claire now.

“What happened?”

Claire ignored him.

Her eyes locked on Margaret.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY DAUGHTER?!”

Margaret looked annoyed.

Not ashamed.

Not frightened.

Annoyed.

“She was in the way.”

The room went silent.

Claire stared.

Margaret pointed dismissively toward Lily.

“That space is for Aaron’s real children.”

Lily immediately cried harder.

Claire felt something inside her split.

“Real children?”

Vanessa laughed.

Actually laughed.

“Stop pretending that little girl belongs here.”

Claire looked at Aaron.

He had gone pale.

That frightened her more than Vanessa’s cruelty.

Margaret smiled.

“She needs to learn her place.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“If that hurts her feelings, too bad.”

Claire slowly lowered Lily to the floor.

She turned toward a stunned catering manager.

“Please stay with her.”

Then she stepped in front of Lily.

Her tears stopped.

Her face went cold.

Margaret finally noticed.

“Claire—”

Claire screamed.

Then moved.

She grabbed Margaret by the hair with one hand—

Vanessa by the hair with the other.

Both women shrieked.

Aaron jumped forward.

“CLAIRE!”

Guests froze.

Claire yanked both women off balance.

Margaret stumbled.

Vanessa screamed and clawed at Claire’s wrist.

Claire dragged them across the polished floor.

“YOU’LL FEEL WHAT YOU MADE MY DAUGHTER FEEL!”
