Chapter 8 - LILY FINALLY SAID WHAT HAPPENED IN THE ROOM
For weeks, Lily avoided closed doors.
She slept with the hall light on.
If Claire went to another room, Lily followed.
The storage room lasted fifteen minutes.
The fear lasted months.
A child therapist named Dr. Rebecca Hall worked with her through drawing and play.
One afternoon, Lily drew the birthday hall.
The table.
The cake.
The twins.
Then a small pink figure behind a black square.
Dr. Hall asked:
“What is this?”
“The room.”
“What happened there?”
Lily whispered:
“Grandma said Daddy had real kids now.”
Claire sat behind the observation window and felt her heart break.
Then Lily added:
“She said Mommy would leave when she saw.”
Claire froze.
Margaret had not merely removed Lily.
She had tried to use the child as part of a confrontation strategy.
Later, under properly managed child-interview procedures, Lily repeated the same memory.
Not coached.
Not dramatized.
Margaret had said:
Aaron finally has the family he should have had.
Then:
Your mother will understand soon.
