Chapter 2 - EVIE DIDN'T ORDER A PSYCHIATRIC HOLD

By morning, the family story had already mutated.

According to Madeline, Evie had “weaponized psychiatry.”

According to Vivian’s cousin Patricia, Evie had arranged for “men in scrubs” to drag a perfectly healthy woman from her daughter’s wedding.

According to three relatives who had not even been in the ballroom, Evie had fabricated a mental-health crisis because Vivian disliked her.

Daniel heard all of it.

Then he asked Evie the only question that mattered.

“Did you call them?”

They sat in the emergency waiting area at St. Catherine Medical Center.

Madeline had gone home with her new husband.

Vivian was being evaluated.

Evie’s damaged processor sat in a plastic evidence bag because hospital security had photographed it after learning what happened at the reception.

Evie looked at Daniel.

“No.”

He searched her face.

“You knew they were coming.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because your mother’s physician called me yesterday.”

Daniel went still.

“Dr. Harris?”

“Yes.”

Vivian had seen Dr. Rebecca Harris for years.

Primary care.

Blood pressure.

Cholesterol.

Routine health.

Three weeks earlier, Dr. Harris had called Evie after Vivian listed her as an emergency contact.

Not Daniel.

Not Madeline.

Evie.

That choice suddenly seemed strange.

Dr. Harris said Vivian had begun making threatening statements during appointments.

Not vague anger.

Specific behavior.

She had threatened to drive her car through the locked gates of a neighbor’s house.

She had described keeping a loaded handgun beside her bed because “people were coming for her.”

She had accused household staff of poisoning her tea.

Then, two days before the wedding, she told Dr. Harris:

“If Evie embarrasses this family again, I’ll make sure she never speaks at another event.”

That sentence alone would not justify involuntary evaluation.

But it did not stand alone.

Vivian had driven into oncoming traffic during an argument with her housekeeper.

She had shoved a groundskeeper down three steps.

She had thrown a crystal decanter at Daniel’s father, Robert, six months earlier.

Robert concealed it.

The family concealed everything.

Dr. Harris did not.

She consulted a psychiatrist and county crisis team.

A judge authorized an emergency evaluation based on documented escalating behavior and risk.

Evie had only been told because Vivian had named her as emergency contact.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Daniel asked.

Evie looked away.

May you like

“Because every time I tell you something about your mother, you ask me if I misunderstood.”

That silenced him.
