Chapter 7 - DANIEL FINALLY CHOSE A SIDE
Families like the Whitakers did not explode cleanly.
They fractured by dinner invitation.
By group chat.
By who sat where at Thanksgiving.
Vivian demanded Daniel publicly denounce Evie for “orchestrating” the hospital intervention.
Madeline agreed.
Robert refused.
That alone changed the balance.
Then Daniel did something Evie had waited six years to see.
He stopped saying:
Let’s keep peace.
Instead, he sent one message to the family.
My wife did not order my mother hospitalized. A licensed physician, crisis team, and court acted on documented safety concerns. Evie was notified because Mom listed her as emergency contact. Stop lying about what happened.
Then:
Mom intentionally removed and threw Evie’s hearing device in front of witnesses. That is unacceptable. I will not minimize it again.
Evie read the message in silence.
Daniel stood across the room.
“I should have done that years ago.”
“Yes.”
No reassurance.
No easy absolution.
He nodded.
“I know.”
Then he asked:
“Do you still want me?”
Evie looked at him.
“That’s not the question.”
“What is?”
“Can I trust you to believe me before there are two hundred witnesses?”
Daniel’s face broke.
He did not answer quickly.
