Chapter 4 - THE EVALUATION DIDN'T GIVE EVIE REVENGE
Vivian was discharged after thirty-one hours.
That shocked Madeline.
It disappointed several relatives who apparently wanted a dramatic punishment.
Evie felt neither.
The psychiatric team concluded Vivian was not psychotic.
Not cognitively impaired.
Not detached from reality.
She knew where she was.
Knew the date.
Understood consequences.
She was angry, suspicious, controlling, and escalating in behavior.
But a psychiatric evaluation was not a moral verdict.
She did not meet criteria for continued involuntary hospitalization.
What happened instead was more complicated.
The hospital created a safety plan.
Her physician documented the incidents.
The handgun was temporarily secured through family cooperation while risk was reassessed.
Her driving privileges became a separate concern because of the oncoming-traffic episode.
She agreed, reluctantly, to outpatient psychiatric assessment.
And for the first time, her behavior existed in records outside the family.
Vivian hated that.
When Daniel brought her home, she refused to look at Evie.
Then said:
“You’ll pay for humiliating me.”
Evie answered:
“I didn’t send you there.”
“You enjoyed it.”
“No.”
That was true.
Watching Vivian panic had not felt good.
It felt like watching a structure collapse that should have been repaired years earlier.
Vivian smiled thinly.
“You think paperwork makes you powerful?”
Evie touched the cracked edge of her hearing processor.
“No.”
She looked directly at her.

Vivian’s smile disappeared.
