Chapter 3 - THE TRUST HER FATHER COULDN’T TOUCH

Elena had known about the Mercer Land Trust since college.

She did not understand its power.

Her grandfather created it after a bitter lawsuit with Robert.

He placed the river parcels inside an irrevocable trust.

Robert received income.

Vivian received housing rights through the family estate.

Vanessa received a smaller future beneficiary interest.

Elena received something different.

Approval authority over any sale of the core river property after age twenty-eight.

Her grandfather explained it once:

“Your father loves money more when someone tells him no.”

Elena thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

The trust required Elena’s signature for any sale above ten acres.

Robert had tried three times.

Elena refused because the offers were below independent appraisal.

Then Hale Urban Holdings entered the picture.

Daniel’s father, Thomas Hale, wanted the land.

But Daniel himself had no authority over the acquisition arm.

He worked in preservation.

That distinction apparently did not matter to Robert.

He saw a surname.

A family connection.

An opportunity.

Then came the discovery Arthur Hayes brought to Elena.

A week after the assault, he visited with a banker’s box.

“I promised your grandfather I’d give you this if your father ever tried to force the land.”

Inside were letters.

One from Robert to Thomas Hale.

Three years earlier.

Before Elena met Daniel.

Robert wrote:

We can solve the Mercer vote through marriage if necessary.

Elena stared.

Another letter.

Vanessa is more practical than Elena. She understands family interests.

Daniel read over her shoulder.

His face changed.

“Your father was trying to arrange Vanessa with me?”

Arthur nodded.

“Or someone from your family.”

Elena went cold.

Her father’s scream at the party made sense now.

YOU SHOULD’VE CHOSEN VANESSA.

Not romantic obsession.

May you like

Corporate frustration.

Daniel had chosen the daughter Robert could not control.
