Chapter 6 - DANIEL’S FAMILY HAD ITS OWN SECRET

The biggest surprise came from Thomas Hale.
Daniel’s father requested a private meeting.
He arrived with counsel.
Elena expected denial.
Instead he apologized.
“I knew Robert wanted a family alliance.”
Daniel stared.
“You knew?”
Thomas nodded.
“Years ago.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I refused it.”
“That is not the same as telling me.”
Thomas looked ashamed.
Robert had proposed a merger structure tying Mercer land to Hale development capital.
The deal included a personal suggestion:
Daniel and Vanessa would eventually marry.
Thomas called it “old-fashioned nonsense” and rejected it.
Then he never told Daniel.
Why?
Because he believed the matter was dead.
It was not.
Robert kept planning without Hale approval.
Worse, Thomas had continued negotiating for the Mercer land through intermediaries.
Not illegal.
But deeply conflicted once Daniel and Elena became engaged.
Daniel stood.
“You were negotiating against my fiancée’s trust?”
Thomas said:
“Against Robert.”
“No. The trust was hers to approve.”
That distinction damaged father and son.
The betrayal was not equal to Robert’s violence.
But it mattered.
Daniel stepped away from all Hale Urban Holdings work connected to the river project.
Then publicly disclosed the conflict.
Robert lost the ability to claim Elena’s marriage was secretly part of a Hale takeover.

Truth became less convenient for everyone.
That made it stronger.
