Chapter 10 - WHY DIANE THREW HER OUT
The investigation uncovered something Claire had not expected.
Five years earlier, the same year Diane expelled her, the foundation had considered hiring Claire.
Thomas’s former colleague, board member Samuel Grant, suggested Claire could train under the steward.
Diane opposed it.
Board email:
Claire lacks consistency and should not be placed in a role involving donor relations or property operations.
Another:
She has no professional discipline.
Claire stared.
At twenty-four, she had struggled.
True.
She had lost two jobs.
One café closed.
One retail job ended because Claire missed shifts while caring for Diane after surgery.
That part never appeared in Diane’s emails.
Then another message.
Diane to Margaret:
Claire needs to learn consequences. If we keep cushioning her, she will never become independent.
Three days later, Diane threw her out.
Claire later found one more email from the year she was expelled.
Margaret had written Diane:
If Claire does not want the trainee role, we should ask her directly and close the matter.
Diane replied:
She does not want it.
No evidence Claire had ever been asked.
Claire stared at that line for a long time.
It was not just the job.
It was the assumption of voice.
Diane had answered for Claire.
Again.
The same pattern behind:
You are not ready.
You need a shock.
You would fail without me.
Diane rarely framed her choices as control.
She framed them as knowing Claire better than Claire knew herself.
That was why the eventual time-jump reversal mattered so much.
Five years later, Diane still expected to define what Claire wanted.
Claire’s success had not automatically cured that dynamic.
Claire had to refuse it consciously.
Claire finally understood.
The eviction had not been a spontaneous argument.
Diane believed she was administering a lesson.
Cruel.
Humiliating.
But, in her own mind, corrective.
Claire confronted her.
“Did you know the board was considering me?”
Diane answered:
“You weren’t ready.”
“You decided that.”
“I was right.”
Claire looked at her career now.
Diane continued:
“Look what happened after I pushed you.”
