The Barrymore Foundation thrived after Maggie stepped down.
At first, that hurt.
She had secretly expected chaos.
Instead the new chair improved grant review.
Added fraud controls.
Expanded programs.
Removed family preferences.
Maggie attended an annual event as a donor.
No seat at the head table.
Theo asked:
“Does that bother you?”
“A little.”
“You could buy the table.”
Maggie laughed.
“That is exactly the problem.”
Drew attended too.
Not as beneficiary.
As a volunteer from her medical office, which partnered with the foundation on community health screenings.
Maggie stared when she saw her sister stacking chairs.
Drew caught her.
“Say nothing.”
“I wasn't.”
“You were thinking something.”
“Always.”
They smiled.
The foundation's independent review published a report about governance failures during Daniel and Maggie's era.
It named no malicious wrongdoing by Maggie.
Still, the language hurt.
Informal family influence.
Inadequate credential controls.
Conflict-of-interest weaknesses.
Maggie considered disputing phrasing.
Then didn't.
Accurate enough.
Daniel's legacy became more complicated publicly.
Some friends defended him aggressively.
Maggie stopped them.
“He made mistakes.”
One said:
“You don't need to tarnish his memory.”
Maggie replied:
“Truth does not tarnish memory. Lies do.”
That became another family principle.
Theo eventually read the full report when older.
