Chapter 17 - CODY'S QUESTION
At fourteen, Cody asked Maggie:
“Did you really almost ruin our family because of a cake?”
He was joking.
Mostly.
Maggie answered seriously.
“No.”
“What did the cake do?”
“It made me stop overlooking everything else.”
Cody nodded.
“Mom says it saved us.”
Maggie stared.
“She says that?”
“Yeah.”
Drew had developed a dark sense of humor about the crisis.
The most expensive birthday cake in Brooklyn.
Maggie hated the joke at first.
Then less.
Cody became thoughtful.
“If I hadn't done it, would Mom still be stealing?”
Maggie corrected:
“Misusing money.”
“Whatever.”
“Maybe.”
“So I helped?”
“No.”
He frowned.
Maggie smiled.
“You hurt Theo.”
“Yeah.”
“That was wrong.”
“Yeah.”
“And adults responded to what they learned afterward.”
“So I'm not hero.”
“No.”
“Not villain.”
“No.”
“Just idiot kid.”
Maggie laughed.
“That seems fair.”
He smiled.
The need to transform harm into destiny disappeared.
Cody did not have to be the child whose cruelty saved the family.
He could simply be a kid who did something wrong, apologized, and grew.
That was healthier.
Olivia graduated college.
Debt-free partly because the recovered educational trust was managed properly.
She became a financial analyst.
Drew groaned.
“Everyone in this family is obsessed with money.”
Olivia replied:
“Maybe because you made it dramatic.”
Fair.
Theo grew into baseball, then out of it.
The famous cake became a story he told friends.
Not trauma.
One night Maggie asked if he minded.
“Mind what?”
“People laughing about it now.”
“No.”
“You were devastated.”
“I was eight.”
“Still.”
Theo shrugged.
“Cody apologized.”
Then:
“You were more traumatized than me.”
Maggie stared.
He was probably right.
The moment had shattered her understanding of family.
Theo had lost a cake.
Cried.
Recovered.
Adults often preserved injury longer than children did.
Maggie made a note to stop telling the story as though Theo remained frozen at eight.
He was not.
