Chapter 18 - DREW'S FIRST BIG EMERGENCY

Five years after the birthday, Drew lost her job.

The medical office merged.

Positions eliminated.

She called Maggie.

Old pattern hovered between them.

Maggie waited.

Drew said:

“I am not asking for money.”

Maggie smiled.

“Okay.”

“I just need to freak out.”

“Go ahead.”

Drew panicked for twenty minutes.

Mortgage.

Insurance.

College.

Cody's braces.

Maggie listened.

Did not solve.

Then asked:

“What is your plan?”

Drew laughed.

“I hate that question.”

“Still.”

“I have six months emergency savings.”

Maggie froze.

“You do?”

“Don't sound so shocked.”

“I am impressed.”

“I have unemployment.”

“Good.”

“I've applied to four places.”

“Good.”

“And if things get bad, I sell the house.”

Maggie stared.

Years earlier Drew would have demanded Maggie preserve the house.

Now she viewed it as an asset.

Not identity.

“Sounds like you have a plan.”

“I do.”

Silence.

Drew whispered:

“This feels terrible.”

“Probably.”

“I want you to fix it.”

“I know.”

“I also don't want you to.”

Maggie's eyes filled.

“That's new.”

“Very.”

Drew found work two months later.

No bailout.

No disaster.

Just adulthood.

Maggie cried after they hung up.

Theo, thirteen now, found her.

“What happened?”

“Aunt Drew got a job.”

“Why are you crying?”

“Because she didn't need me.”

Theo stared.

“That's good.”

“I know.”

Then he smiled.

“You're weird.”

Also fair.

May you like

Maggie finally understood that being unnecessary did not mean being unloved.

That lesson freed her more than any financial victory.
