Chapter 6 - ROBERT'S DIFFERENT SECRET
Robert knew Daniel was adopted.
Obviously.
But Claire discovered he had hidden something else.
Robert was infertile.
Not absolutely.
But functionally.
His oncology records from adolescence documented treatment that left him with extremely low fertility.
Claire had been conceived through donor-assisted reproduction.
Margaret knew.
Robert knew.
Claire did not.
Claire read the clinic record twice.
She had spent thirty-two years thinking Robert was her biological father.
He was not.
That meant the dining-room hierarchy was even stranger.
Daniel was not Claire’s biological brother.
Robert was not Claire’s biological father.
Yet Robert was using biology to rank children.
Claire confronted him after the assault, through attorneys.
“You screamed that Daniel deserves the property because he’s the son.”
Robert stared.
“He is my son.”
“Yes.”
“Then what is your point?”
“My point is you keep using biology when biology is not even the reason either of us is your child.”
Robert’s face tightened.
Claire continued:
“You adopted Daniel.”
Silence.
“You raised me knowing I was donor-conceived.”
Robert looked away.
“You are both my children.”
“Then why does daughter mean less?”
He had no answer.
That was the deeper hypocrisy.
Claire’s donor-conception discovery created its own crisis.
Her biological donor had been anonymous under the clinic rules used thirty-three years earlier.
Modern records later allowed limited medical-history access but not immediate identity disclosure.
Claire did not launch a dramatic search.
At first she wanted only one thing:
accurate family medical history.
Robert seemed offended.
“You have my family history.”
Claire looked at him.
“Not genetically.”
He flinched.
That was when she understood he had spent decades treating fatherhood as emotional when talking about himself, but biological when discussing Daniel as heir.
The contradiction was not abstract anymore.
Claire told him:
“You cannot ask me to believe love makes you my father and then ask me to believe blood makes Daniel more entitled than me.”
Robert had no language left.
Not adoption.
