Chapter 4 - GRANDMA EVELYN HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THEM TO TRY

Evelyn Whitmore had not discovered the sales by accident.

She had been waiting.

That revelation made Claire furious.

They sat in Evelyn’s private sitting room the evening after the jewelry confrontation.

Claire placed the valuation email on the table.

“You knew they were asking about the pieces?”

Evelyn nodded.

“For months.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I wanted proof.”

Claire stood.

That phrase.

Proof.

Powerful people loved proof when someone else paid for it.

“You could have stopped them after the first sale.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“I stopped what I could without revealing the trust structure.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because Richard has been trying to challenge my capacity.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Evelyn looked suddenly older.

“He has been telling people I’m confused.”

Claire sat back down.

Over the previous year, Richard had quietly begun describing his mother as forgetful.

He asked doctors for records.

He requested copies of older estate plans.

He told two board members Evelyn no longer understood “modern asset management.”

Why?

Because if he could establish incapacity, he could try to take over broader trust administration.

The jewelry was a test.

Not Evelyn’s test.

Richard’s.

He wanted to see whether anyone would challenge small unauthorized transfers before he moved against larger assets.

“Why Ava?” Claire asked.

Evelyn’s voice hardened.

“Because he thought you were too busy to notice and she was too young to object.”

That was the most unforgivable calculation yet.

Not greed.
