The headline was absurd.

Claire finally explained the sentence publicly through counsel.
Europe was not punishment.
It was recovery.
Two pieces had already been sold through dealers in London and Geneva.
A third had entered a private auction pipeline in Paris.
Claire had immediately instructed international counsel and insurers to issue ownership disputes and preservation notices.
She was going to send:
lawyers,
claims,
provenance records,
trust certificates,
and, if necessary, investigators.
To Europe.
Not her family.
The line had sounded like revenge.
The actual plan was better.
Within four months:
the sapphire bracelet was recovered in London before resale.
The emerald earrings were frozen at a Geneva dealer pending title review.
One brooch had already been sold to a good-faith buyer in France.
Recovery there became complicated.
Claire chose compensation rather than terrorizing an innocent purchaser.
The second brooch remained missing.
The diamond watch had been melted for stones.
That hurt Evelyn most.
She had worn it on her wedding day.
