Chapter 10 - WHERE THE MONEY ACTUALLY WENT
Ryan assumed Caleb had wasted the borrowed money.
He had not.
Forensic accountant Priya Shah reconstructed the business.
Of roughly $125,000 in revenue-advance funding:
$46,000 went to payroll.
$21,500 to materials.
$14,800 to equipment and truck payments.
$12,600 to overdue subcontractors.
$9,400 to rent and utilities.
$6,300 to taxes.
The rest went to fees, card payments, and ordinary business expenses.
Very little went to personal luxury.
Caleb did not buy watches.
Did not gamble.
Did not fund vacations.
That made the betrayal harder.
He had committed fraud to keep a real business alive.
Priya also reviewed Caleb’s personal spending.
She found one weekend trip costing $1,200.
A $700 watch.
Several restaurant charges.
Ryan seized on them.
“There. That’s where the money went.”
Priya shook her head.
“No.”
Ryan frowned.
“These are irresponsible.”
“Possibly.”
“But?”
“But they do not explain a six-figure business collapse.”
She showed him scale.
Total questionable personal discretionary spending during the crisis period:
about $4,600.
Material to Caleb personally.
Not material to the debt.
Ryan realized he wanted a simple explanation because simple explanations were easier to punish.
Caleb was not broke because of steak dinners.
He was broke because:
margins collapsed,
customer payments failed,
debt compounded,
and he refused to shrink fast enough.
The fraud came afterward.
That made the story less satisfying.
Also more true.
Ryan asked:
“Then why didn’t you just shut it down?”
Caleb answered:
“Because four people worked for me.”
“And?”
“And I thought one good month fixed everything.”
“How many months did you think that?”
Caleb started crying.
“Eight.”
There it was.
Caleb had not been stealing for pleasure.
He had been sacrificing future truth to preserve present appearances.
Every month he believed the next month would save him.
