Chapter 4 - THE AUDIO IN THE SNOW
Samuel’s phone was recovered near the roadside.
Waterlogged.
Cracked.
Still useful.
After surgery, his physical therapist had installed a fall-detection application.
The app recorded short audio clips whenever it detected sudden movement or impact.
Most clips contained wind.
One had Samuel screaming.
Another captured a door slamming.
Then the analyst isolated voices.
Meredith:
“Shut the door.”
Samuel:
“Don’t leave me here!”
Caleb:
“Dad, please…”
Then Samuel:
“You coward!”
The clip ended.
It did not capture the beginning.
It did not show Caleb physically pulling Samuel out.
But it destroyed one claim.
Samuel had not wandered away voluntarily.
Then another clip.
Meredith:
“Don’t look back.”
Silence.
SUV engine fading.
Evelyn smiled for the first time.
“That helps.”
Samuel wanted more than help.
He wanted annihilation.
Then the independent doctor evaluated him.
Memory.
Orientation.
Medication effects.
Decision-making.
Samuel passed most tests.
But he became furious when asked about Caleb.
The doctor noted “significant emotional agitation.”
Meredith’s lawyer seized on it.
Postoperative pain.
Sleep deprivation.
Paranoia.
Hostility toward designated successor.
Then they produced Samuel’s own messages from the month before surgery.
To Caleb:
You are too weak to lead this company.
Another:
If Meredith has to make every hard decision for you, maybe she should have been my child.
Samuel read the text and closed his eyes.
He remembered sending it.
Cruel.
True to how he had felt.
Caleb’s lawyer argued:
“This family conflict predates the storm. Samuel is now rewriting it as a conspiracy because he regrets losing control.”
Smart.
Then Evelyn asked Samuel:
“Did you ever try to leave rehab against medical advice?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I hated being there.”
“Did staff stop you?”
“Yes.”
“So they have real evidence that you resist care.”
Samuel stared.
He understood.
The truth would not be enough if Meredith controlled the frame.
Then the SUV was finally inspected.
Exterior cameras:
Disabled.
Interior recorder:
Memory overwritten.
Meredith blamed a system reset caused by extreme cold.
The manufacturer disagreed.
Cold could corrupt data.
It would not manually disable camera inputs.
Someone had done it.
The access log showed an administrator profile.
