Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO SAID HE ONLY WANTED TO SCARE HIM
Caleb asked to speak privately.
Samuel refused.
Evelyn allowed a recorded legal conference.
Caleb looked terrible.
Unshaven.
Eyes red.
“I didn’t want you dead.”
Samuel stared at him.
“You pulled me out of a car.”
“I know.”
“You left me in a blizzard.”
“I know.”
“You lied afterward.”
Caleb looked down.
“I panicked.”
Samuel laughed.
Pain shot through his hip.
“You always panic. Meredith decides.”
Caleb flinched.
There.
Same old wound.
Then he said:
“There was supposed to be another vehicle.”
Samuel stopped.
“What?”
“A security contractor. Half a mile behind us. They were supposed to pick you up.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Why?”
Caleb swallowed.
“To take you to the private clinic.”
Samuel’s face hardened.
“So you were going to frighten me.”
Caleb said nothing.
“Make me think I’d been abandoned.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Meredith said you would never agree to temporary treatment. She said if you were separated from your phone and board contacts for one night, the doctors could evaluate you without pressure.”
Samuel almost stood despite the pain.
“You dumped me in snow to get me into a clinic?”
Caleb looked sick.
“I thought the pickup was coming.”
“Did you disable the cameras?”
“Yes.”
There.
“Why?”
“Meredith said Dad—”
“Don’t call me that.”
Caleb went silent.
Then:
“She said the family didn’t need another humiliating video if you fought us.”
Evelyn asked:
“Who hired the contractor?”
“Northline.”
“Name?”
Caleb gave it.
Summit Protective Services.
The invoice existed.
Pickup assignment:
Highway marker 117.
Time:
8:40 p.m.
Samuel had been left at 8:34.
The contractor should have arrived six minutes later.
Instead the job was canceled at 8:31.
Three minutes before Caleb pulled Samuel from the SUV.
Cancellation method:
Text from Caleb’s registered phone.
Caleb stared at the report.
“I didn’t send that.”
Samuel laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.”
“I swear.”
Then forensic analysts checked the mobile connection.
The text left Caleb’s phone while it was paired to the SUV’s infotainment system.
At the time, Caleb was driving.
Meredith had his phone in her hand.
Samuel remembered.
She had been holding a phone in the passenger seat.
Caleb looked at his father.
“She canceled the pickup.”

And Caleb had been too cowardly to notice until afterward.
