Chapter 4 - THE GUESTS

Walter’s birthday guests became witnesses in ways nobody expected.
Margaret Sloan had heard Brian say:
“Dad’s pension barely covers groceries.”
Neighbor James Carter heard:
“We moved in because he can’t be alone.”
Walter’s niece Rachel heard Melissa say:
“We’re basically unpaid caregivers.”
Unpaid.
Walter stared when he heard that one.
Then guests began sending screenshots.
Melissa in a family group chat:
We had to cancel our anniversary trip because Walter can’t be left.
Date:
same weekend Melissa and Brian were photographed at a lake resort.
Brian:
Dad doesn’t understand online banking anymore.
But Walter’s bank login records showed regular access from Walter’s own laptop.
He understood perfectly.
Then a more troubling pattern emerged.
Whenever Walter challenged a charge, Brian framed the challenge as confusion.
Text:
Walter:
Why is there $2,700 to Bennett Family Support?
Brian:
We talked about this, Dad.
Walter:
No, we didn’t.
Brian:
You forget more than you think.
Another:
Walter:
Please don’t move money without telling me.
Brian:
You asked me to manage this.
Walter:
Bills. Not payments to yourself.
Brian:
This is why I’m worried about you.
Walter read the messages in silence.
He remembered feeling ashamed after those exchanges.
Not certain he was wrong.
But uncertain enough to stop pushing.
Then Melissa’s birthday-party recording became important.
She had recorded thirty-two minutes before the dog-bowl incident.
Not continuously.
Several clips.
In one, Brian joked to guests:
“Dad thinks this is his house.”
People laughed.
Walter was in the kitchen and did not hear it.
Then Brian said:
“Technically his name is still on everything.”
Still.
Like temporary paperwork.
Margaret asked:
“Are you buying it from him?”
Brian replied:
“Eventually it’ll all get sorted.”
No purchase agreement existed.
No deed transfer.
No will giving Brian the house outright.
Yet Brian was already speaking like owner.
Then one clip captured Walter entering the dining room.
Brian immediately changed tone.
“Birthday boy!”
The performance was visible.
Two Brians.
May you like
One when Walter could hear.
One when he could not.
