Chapter 14 - THE THING SERENA DIDN'T DO
Victoria confronted Serena privately.
“You were at the stairs.”
Serena went still.
“Who said?”
“A nurse saw you.”
Serena looked away.
“Why lie?”
Silence.
“Serena.”
“I was there.”
Victoria’s body tensed.
“Did you loosen the runner?”
“No.”
“Did you turn off the lights?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Serena stared at the floor.
“I was looking for Thomas.”
“Why?”
“I wanted him to move your medication into Charles’s room.”
Victoria froze.
“What?”
Serena explained.
Before the fall, she wanted evidence Victoria was confused.
She planned to have Thomas move personal items.
Medication.
Glasses.
Documents.
Then photograph Victoria searching.
Small manufactured disorientation.
No physical harm intended.
Victoria felt sick.
“You were gaslighting me.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
“I left the hallway when I heard you coming. Thomas had already switched the lights off.”
“You heard me fall?”
Serena’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Victoria stared.
“And?”
“I froze.”
“How long?”
“Maybe thirty seconds.”
Thomas arrived afterward.
He restored the breaker.
They both delayed help.
Serena whispered:
“I told myself you were probably fine.”
Victoria’s anger rose.
“You left me on the floor.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Serena looked at her.
“Because if I helped you immediately, Thomas would tell everyone why the lights were off.”
Victoria almost slapped her.
Did not.
Instead:
“You chose the scheme over me.”
Serena nodded.
“Yes.”
That honesty was unbearable.
Victoria stood.
Pain still pulled at her shoulder.
“Get out.”
Serena did.
No argument.
No tears demanded.
No forgiveness asked.
Later, Elias found Victoria alone.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She looked at him.
He shrugged.
“People ask that like yes is required.”
Victoria almost smiled.
Then she said:
“I don’t know if I can forgive her.”
“Then don’t.”
“She helped us stop Robert.”
“That doesn’t erase what she did.”
Victoria looked at him.
He understood boundaries better than the Mercers ever had.
Then he added:
“Charles hurt me and left me a company. Those are separate facts too.”
That became the principle.
Separate facts.
Serena could testify against Robert.
Serena could help save Mercer Holdings.
Serena could tell the truth in court.
And Serena could still be accountable for tormenting Victoria.
The district attorney charged Thomas with evidence tampering and obstruction-related counts.
Serena accepted a plea on attempted coercive control and falsification-related conduct tied to the competency scheme.
No prison guarantee.
Possibly probation.
Victoria did not ask for mercy.
She did not ask for maximum punishment either.
She told the truth.
Only that.
Meanwhile, Robert was indicted on fraud and conspiracy counts.
He fought.
Aggressively.
Challenged warrants.
Attacked Lydia.
Blamed his son.
Claimed old age and poor memory selectively.
Still strategic.
Still dangerous.
But no longer controlling the board.
Mercer Holdings recovered $21 million quickly.
More through settlements later.
Professional management stabilized covenant issues.
The company survived.
Then the ninety-day succession date arrived.
Elias had to decide.
Keep control.
Transfer to employee trust.
Or split beneficial ownership under a special family settlement.
Richard asked:
“What do you want?”
Elias looked at Victoria.
