Chapter 4 - THE PASSWORD

Ashley did not deny having Robert’s password.

She denied misusing it.

“You asked me to pay the electric bill while you were traveling.”

“One bill,” Robert said.

“You said the password worked for everything.”

“I did not say to access my email.”

“I didn’t.”

Emily watched Ashley carefully.

She was not flustered.

She was choosing each sentence.

David asked, “Did you upload Emily’s identification?”

“No.”

“Did you scan it?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the refinancing?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Ashley.”

But the admission was already out.

David remained calm.

“How?”

Ashley looked at her mother.

“Mom talked about it.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Emily saw the shift.

Ashley had just moved some of the danger onto Vanessa.

Robert saw it too.

“What exactly did you tell her?”

Vanessa answered, “That we were considering borrowing against the house to pay off some debts and renovate.”

“What debts?”

“Our debts.”

Robert stared.

“We don’t have two hundred forty thousand dollars in debt.”

Vanessa looked toward Ashley.

For the first time, Ashley looked nervous.

Emily noticed.

“So whose debt is it?”

“No one said the entire loan was for debt,” Vanessa replied.

David leaned back.

“Then where was the money supposed to go?”

Vanessa’s answer came slowly.

“Some to renovations. Some to investments.”

“What investments?”

“Ashley had an opportunity.”

Robert stared at his stepdaughter.

“What opportunity?”

Ashley crossed her arms.

“A small online fashion business.”

Emily almost laughed.

“You were going to borrow against my mother’s house for a clothing website?”

Ashley’s face sharpened.

“It’s not your house yet.”

David answered before Emily could.

“Her beneficial interest exists now.”

Ashley looked at him.

“And she’s done what to deserve it?”

The room went silent.

There it was.

Not greed disguised as misunderstanding.

Resentment.

Emily stepped closer.

“My mother died.”

“I know.”

“She left it to me.”

“And somehow that makes you special forever.”

Vanessa snapped, “Ashley, enough.”

But Emily finally saw what had been hiding behind every little insult over the years.

Ashley was not angry about earrings.

She was angry about the shape of the family.

Emily had a dead mother whose photographs stayed on the walls.

Emily had a trust.

Emily had a biological connection to Robert that Vanessa and Ashley could never erase.

Ashley turned to Robert.

“Tell her.”

Robert frowned.

“Tell me what?” Emily asked.

No one answered.

Ashley’s eyes filled with anger.

“You let her walk around acting like she owns everything.”

Robert’s voice became hard.

“I said enough.”

Ashley laughed.

Then she grabbed her handbag and walked toward the front hall.

Vanessa followed.

Emily stayed with David and Robert.

David opened the household drive and began reviewing access logs.

A folder titled ESTATE contained copies of old tax documents, Laura’s trust summaries, and insurance policies.

The access history showed repeated downloads.

User: ASHLEY.

Dates stretching back four months.

Robert sat down heavily.

“She told me she was organizing files.”

Emily looked at him.

“You let her into Mom’s estate folder?”

Robert covered his face.

David clicked another entry.

A PDF had been downloaded eleven times.

It was Emily’s trust summary.

The last download occurred the night before the earrings incident.

Then David opened the printer log.

One page had been printed from Ashley’s laptop.

A page from Laura’s trust.

At the bottom was a handwritten note scanned into the original document.

Robert read it aloud.

“See sealed letter regarding A.M.”

Emily stared.

“A.M.?”

May you like

Ashley Monroe.

Robert stopped breathing.
