Chapter 8 - THE CAMERA THAT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO MATTER

The living room security camera had not recorded the slap.

Robert had disabled interior video months earlier because Vanessa disliked feeling watched.

But the system still stored motion timestamps.

At 10:04 a.m., Ashley entered the living room.

At 10:07, Emily entered.

At 10:09, Vanessa entered.

At 10:10, the argument began.

Ashley had been alone with both handbags for three minutes.

Not proof.

But enough to weaken her story.

Emily began thinking about everything Ashley needed.

Her driver’s license scan.

Robert’s password.

The trust documents.

A record of Emily appearing unstable.

The missing jewelry.

It was not random theft.

It was a structure.

Ashley had created financial pressure, then tried to make Emily look dangerous and dishonest.

Robert finally saw it too.

He sat with Emily at the kitchen island long after midnight.

“I failed you.”

Emily looked at him.

“Yes.”

He did not defend himself.

“I kept avoiding conflict because I thought that made me fair.”

“It made whoever yelled loudest win.”

He nodded.

Emily’s eyes filled.

“When Vanessa hit me, you stood there.”

“I know.”

“You always stand there.”

Robert cried quietly.

“I know.”

It was the first apology Emily believed because he did not ask her to forgive him.

The next morning, David arranged for a forensic review of the family laptop, phones, and cloud backups with everyone’s consent except Ashley’s.

Ashley refused.

“That’s my private property.”

No one forced her.

But Robert removed her access to shared accounts.

Vanessa did not object.

Ashley looked at her mother.

“You’re choosing them.”

Vanessa whispered, “I’m choosing the truth.”

Ashley laughed.

“No. You’re scared.”

She stormed upstairs.

Hours later, Emily found something simple.

Not technical.

A family tablet left charging in the den.

It synced photographs from the shared household cloud.

Emily searched by date.

Three weeks earlier, there were images of Robert’s birthday dinner.

Cake.

Flowers.

A blurry photo of Vanessa laughing.

Then a photograph of Emily’s driver’s license.

Front.

Back.

Perfectly centered.

Uploaded from Ashley’s phone.

Robert stared.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Emily kept scrolling.

Next was a photograph of Laura’s safe.

Then the trust summary.

Then a close-up of Emily’s signature from an old school form.

Ashley had built a forgery kit in pictures.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“Oh my God.”

Robert called David.

Emily kept looking.

One final photo had been deleted from the main album but remained in recently deleted.

It showed the inside of Laura’s safe.

The sealed envelope was visible.

Across the front, in Laura’s handwriting:

FOR EMILY AT TWENTY-ONE.

Ashley had photographed it before it disappeared.

Vanessa whispered, “She took it.”

Emily enlarged the image.

Something else was visible beneath the envelope.

A corner of another paper.

A laboratory letterhead.

And one line:

May you like

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.97%.

Emily stopped breathing.
