Chapter 10 - WHY CLAIRE WAS THERE
Claire did not magically appear.
Evelyn had texted her from the car.
Not an emergency message.
Just:
They’re taking me to look at some cottage. I don’t want it. Can you call me?
Claire called.
No answer.
Then Evelyn sent a location pin.
Claire was already driving back from a wholesale flour pickup.
Ten minutes away.
She turned.
When she reached the roadside, she heard Evelyn pleading before she saw anyone.
After pulling her mother from the pit, Claire called emergency services.
Victor shouted:
“You’re destroying this family.”
Claire answered:
“No.”

She looked at Evelyn covered in mud.
“You did that yourselves.”
