Chapter 6 - EVELYN'S OWN FAILURE
Evelyn could not blame only them.
She had said yes.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Why?
Martin had been the disciplined parent.
Evelyn had been the soft one.
After he died, saying no felt like abandoning the children a second time.
Victor knew how to ask when she was lonely.
Grant knew how to sound ashamed.
Neither needed to threaten her.
They only needed to arrive with a crisis.
Evelyn liked solving crises.
It made her necessary.
Diane told her once:
“You are using money to avoid watching them fail.”
Evelyn snapped:
“They’re my sons.”
“Yes.”
“They need me.”
“Maybe.”
Then Diane said the sentence Evelyn hated most:
“Or maybe you need them to need you.”

That was harder.
Because it was partly true.
