Chapter 1 - WHAT DID YOU CHANGE?

Daniel Carter opened the bedroom door and stopped.

His mother was half-upright in bed.

Vanessa had one hand around Margaret’s jaw.

The other held a bowl of dark liquid against her mouth.

Margaret was coughing.

The liquid ran down her chin and onto the blanket.

“Drink it!”

Margaret turned her face away.

Vanessa grabbed her shoulder.

“You want to act ungrateful? Drink!”

Daniel moved before he thought.

He crossed the room and struck the bowl from Vanessa’s hand.

It hit the floor.

Dark liquid splashed across the rug.

“MOM!”

Margaret sagged toward him.

Daniel caught her.

She was frighteningly light.

Her pale-blue cardigan hung loosely over the hospital gown.

He helped her sit against the pillows.

“Can you breathe?”

Margaret coughed.

“Yes.”

“Did you choke?”

“A little.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Her gray sweater was spotted with black liquid.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“She won’t eat.”

“So you force this into her mouth?”

“She has to take something.”

Margaret whispered:

“That isn’t what the doctor gave me.”

Daniel looked toward the bedside table.

Prescription bottles.

Anti-nausea medication.

Pain medication.

A nutritional drink.

Then he saw the drawer partly open.

Inside was a stack of printed oncology notes.

One page had handwritten corrections.

Another had a line crossed out.

Daniel reached for them.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

He opened the top page.

PATIENT CONTINUES TO REFUSE PRESCRIBED NUTRITION AND MEDICATION DESPITE CAREGIVER INSTRUCTION.

Daniel stared.

“Mom?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I didn’t refuse.”

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

She went still.

He pointed at the papers.

“Why did you change my mother’s medical records?”

Vanessa’s face lost color.

She looked at the floor.

Daniel understood immediately.

The bowl was not the whole betrayal.

It was the piece he happened to walk in on.
