Chapter 5 - WHY VANESSA NEEDED "NONCOMPLIANCE"
Daniel wanted the motive to be money.
Money would have been easier.
There was no stolen inheritance.
No life insurance scheme.
No secret will.
Vanessa wanted Margaret out of the house.
That was the truth she could not say.
Three months into treatment, Vanessa told Daniel:
“I can’t keep doing this.”
He answered:
“It’s only a few more weeks.”
That sentence broke something.
A few more weeks.
As if caregiving had an expiration date Vanessa should simply endure.
She tried again.
“She needs more help than I can give.”
Daniel said:
“We can hire someone during the day.”
But nights remained.
Appointments remained.
Laundry.
Cleaning.
Food.
Fear.
Vanessa worked remotely and became the default person for all of it.
Daniel believed paying for daytime help solved the burden.
Vanessa did not know how to say:
I regret agreeing to this.
She feared sounding selfish.
So she looked for an external authority that would make the decision for her.
If Margaret became medically “noncompliant” at home, the oncology team might recommend a more structured setting:
short-term rehabilitation,
skilled nursing,
or another supervised care arrangement depending on need.
Then Vanessa would not be the woman who sent her sick mother-in-law away.
Doctors would.
That was the plan.
Daniel later discovered Vanessa had created a private spreadsheet.
Columns:
CALORIES.
MEDS.
WATER.
WEIGHT.
COMPLIANCE.
Margaret’s name filled the rows.
Green cells for completed.
Yellow for partial.
Red for refused.
Daniel stared at the final column.
COMPLIANCE SCORE.
A percentage.
One day:
62%.
Another:
48%.
A note:
Needs consequences or structured facility.
Daniel felt sick.
Vanessa defended it.
“I was tracking patterns.”
“You were grading her.”
“I needed to know if the plan was working.”
“You gave my mother a score?”
Vanessa looked down.
The spreadsheet was not illegal.
It was revealing.
Margaret had stopped being a patient.
She had become a failing system.
Not elegant.
