Chapter 14 - VANESSA WITHOUT THE CARDS

Sixteen months after the living-room incident, Vanessa stood on a public driving range.

Not her old club.

Her membership had lapsed after she chose not to renew it personally.

She could afford it.

Barely.

She chose not to.

Aurelia House eventually launched in a smaller form.

No lake property.

No resort.

Three-day executive wellness programs hosted at rented boutique hotels.

Modest.

Real.

Vanessa invested her own money.

Lost some.

Earned some.

For the first time, every expense hurt enough to evaluate.

She also completed court-ordered intervention and probation related to the assault and failure to seek aid.

No prison fantasy.

No permanent banishment.

Margaret chose no contact.

Vanessa respected it.

That mattered.

She sent one letter through counsel.

Margaret did not answer.

In it Vanessa wrote:

I kept telling myself you exaggerated because that made ignoring you feel reasonable.

Then:

When you grabbed my ankle, I experienced you as an obstacle instead of a frightened person.

That was the sentence Margaret later showed David.

She still did not reply.

An apology does not create an obligation.

Vanessa’s letter to Margaret went through three drafts.

The first said:

I’m sorry things escalated.

Her therapist made her delete it.

“What escalated?”

Vanessa said:

“The argument.”

“Who kicked whom?”

Vanessa looked away.

Second draft:

I’m sorry I reacted physically when you grabbed me.

Again the therapist stopped.

“That centers your reaction.”

Third draft:

I kicked you while you were asking for emergency help. I left because I valued my plans over your fear. That was cruel and dangerous.

Vanessa cried while writing it.

Not because the sentence was dramatic.

Because it had no escape hatch.

No mention of Margaret’s insults.

No mention of golf pressure.

No mention of David.

Just action.

May you like

Responsibility.

That was the version she sent.
