Chapter 4 - THE OLD FORMULA

The old formula sample was not dangerous.
Independent testing later showed no obvious safety problem.
Margaret’s nausea still could not be assigned confidently to the food.
That should have reduced tension.
Instead it made Daniel more suspicious.
Why had Vanessa brought home an obsolete sample and called it Batch 47?
Margaret gave him her theory.
“She wanted me to taste something closer to what I remembered.”
“So I’d sign.”
“Yes.”
Daniel sat beside her at his sister Claire’s house.
“Why not just tell you the formula changed?”
“Because then the heritage claim gets complicated.”
Daniel asked:
“Would you have approved the new version?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s the point. I wasn’t asked.”
Then Margaret showed him something she had taken from the office a week earlier.
A yellow copy of a deviation report.
Batch 47.
Production parameter outside target window.
Initial disposition:
HOLD — QA REVIEW REQUIRED.
Below it was a handwritten note:
COMMERCIAL DEADLINE 12/18 — EXECUTIVE DECISION NEEDED.
Initials:
VC.
Vanessa.
Daniel called Allison.
“Can an executive override a QA hold?”
“No.”
“Never?”
“Not a food-safety hold.”
“This says deviation hold.”
“Still requires QA disposition.”
“Could Vanessa think it was commercial?”
“She can think anything. She cannot release without us.”
Then Daniel asked:
“Was Batch 47 shipped?”
“No.”
Relief.
Then:
“Was anything shipped?”
Allison became quiet.
“Two pallets left the co-packer yesterday.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
“Samples. Not retail sale inventory.”
“Where?”
“Bellweather distribution review.”
“From Batch 47?”
“That is what the paperwork says.”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
If Batch 47 was on hold, why had any material left?
Allison checked.
The shipping document was marked:
NON-SALE EVALUATION SAMPLES.
Quality status:
NOT FOR RETAIL DISTRIBUTION.
That could be legitimate.
Then Daniel noticed the quantity.
Two pallets was a lot for samples.
He asked:
“How many units?”
Allison told him.
Enough for hundreds of stores to inspect.
Not enough for full launch.
Then the co-packer called.
The pallets had not gone to Bellweather.
The carrier changed destination mid-route.
New destination:
CARTER PANTRY TEMPORARY WAREHOUSE.
Authorized by:
NATHAN COLE.
Daniel stared.
His cousin had just told him he was worried about Vanessa.
Now Nathan had redirected product himself.
Daniel called.
Nathan answered immediately.
“I can explain.”
“Start.”
“I stopped it from going to Bellweather.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw the hold.”
“Then why send it to our warehouse?”
“Because if I returned it to the plant, Vanessa would know I interfered before I had proof.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Proof of what?”
May you like
Nathan exhaled.
“That she was planning to relabel it.”
