Emma rebuilt the financial trail from backups.
She had always followed a personal rule:
Never keep one copy of anything you think somebody may want erased.
Before confronting Nicholas, she had exported ledger snapshots to an encrypted personal drive.
Not confidential customer records.
Only reconciliation data and vendor metadata necessary to document suspected misconduct.
Her attorney later confirmed the boundary carefully.
She and forensic accountant Dr. Lena Morris reviewed the chain.
The $8.2 million moved through four vendors.
Ruiz Protective Services.
Hartwell Risk Consulting.
North Arc Logistics.
Crown Field Security.
All fake or barely real.
Funds ultimately landed in two offshore accounts and one domestic private trust.
Beneficiary name hidden.
Then Lena found recurring memo codes.
NC-17.
NC-22.
NC-24.
Emma thought Nicholas Carver.
Too obvious.
Lena cautioned her.
“Fraudsters do not label stolen money with initials for our convenience.”
Fair.
Then another pattern.
Every transfer coincided with acquisitions where Carver Meridian paid unusually high “security stabilization fees.”
Emma remembered those acquisitions.
Small industrial firms.
Distressed manufacturing plants.
Warehouses near port facilities.
Nicholas had justified extra security because of layoffs, protests, and labor disputes.
Real risks.
Potentially inflated expenses.
The fake vendors may have been extracting money from legitimate acquisition budgets.
Who benefited?
That answer came through a trust filing.
Domestic trust:
Cedar Nine Holdings.
Trust protector:
Nathaniel Carver.
Nicholas’s older brother.
Emma frowned.
“I didn’t know he had a brother.”
Most employees didn’t.
Nathaniel had left the company twelve years earlier after a board dispute.
Officially estranged.
Privately?
Maybe not.
Lena looked at Emma.
“Now we have another Carver.”
The story became less simple.
Nicholas might be the architect.
Or he might be covering for someone.
