Chapter 7 - MICHAEL TRENT
Michael Trent had been living in Oregon under his own name.
He had not been kidnapped.
That shocked Emma.
He had fled.
Why?
Because somebody threatened his daughter.
Not directly.
A photograph of her school route appeared on his windshield.
Then an envelope with:
WALK AWAY.
Michael resigned the next morning.
Was the resignation letter authentic?
Yes.
Signed under fear.
He left the state.
Told police he was safe when they eventually contacted him privately.
Asked them not to disclose location.
The missing-person case closed quietly.
Carver Meridian exploited that silence by framing the departure as personal.
Michael had one more thing.
A voice recording.
Nicholas Carver.
Recorded in Michael’s office nine months earlier.
Nicholas:
You found transactions you were not supposed to find.
Michael:
They are company transactions. My job is to find them.
Nicholas:
Your job is to protect the company.
Michael:
From theft?
Long silence.
Nicholas:
From consequences bigger than you understand.
Emma listened.
Not a confession.
But close to consciousness.
Then Michael said on the recording:
Is Nathaniel involved?
Nicholas answered:
Do not say his name again.
Emma looked at David.
Nathaniel.
There it was.
Michael explained.
Years earlier, Nicholas and Nathaniel built a private investment vehicle using Carver Meridian acquisition opportunities.
Not necessarily illegal at first.
Then conflicts multiplied.
Nathaniel’s side entities began receiving contracts from companies Carver Meridian acquired.
Nicholas hid the relationships to avoid board scrutiny.
The fake security vendors later became a way to funnel money back toward Nathaniel’s debts.
Nicholas was not stealing everything for himself.
He was protecting his brother.
Family loyalty dressed as corporate fraud.
Emma almost laughed at the familiarity.
