Chapter 7 - THE OXYGEN MACHINE HAD BEEN UNPLUGGED TWICE
Frank moved temporarily into a rehabilitation facility.
For the first time in months, he slept without Evelyn deciding when he took medication.
Then he told Grant something else.
“The oxygen.”
Grant leaned forward.
“What about it?”
“Twice… unplugged.”
“When?”
“Night.”
“By accident?”
Frank stared at him.
“I thought so.”
The home oxygen concentrator had an internal alarm log.
Investigators retrieved it.
Two power-loss events.
Both after midnight.
Both during weeks when Frank had refused financial paperwork the next morning.
The first time, Evelyn told staff Frank had “pulled the plug himself.”
The second time, she said a housekeeper disconnected it while cleaning.
The housekeeper denied that.
Again:
Pattern.
Not proof of attempted murder.
The prosecution never claimed more than evidence supported.
But elder-abuse investigators became involved.
Medical neglect.
Financial exploitation.
Possible intentional medication misuse.
Frank finally gave a full statement.
Evelyn had begun controlling his medications after he questioned withdrawals.
She told him he was confused.
Told Madison he was confused.
Told doctors he was confused.
Then, over months, he became more confused.
That circularity terrified Nora.
Medication made him weaker.
