Chapter 7 - THE CONTRACTOR ERIC TRIED TO BLAME
Eric changed strategy.
He accused Jenna of intentionally damaging the house by accelerating the roof removal.
His attorney sent a demand alleging:
unauthorized demolition,
emotional harassment,
unsafe exposure,
and interference with Linda’s occupancy rights.
Jenna handed it to Daniel.
He laughed.
Then stopped laughing long enough to answer.
The roof work had:
an active permit,
engineer’s report,
signed repair agreement,
weather protocol,
temporary membrane,
and emergency authorization.
No damage beyond planned removal.
In fact, delaying the repair longer risked mold and structural loss.
Then Ray Donnelly produced texts from Eric.
ERIC:
Can you hold tear-off another two weeks?
RAY:
Need Jenna approval.
ERIC:
She doesn’t own the place.
RAY:
She controls this repair contract.
ERIC:
I’ll pay you cash to delay.
Ray refused.
Why did Eric want delay?
Because he needed the house appraiser to see a “complete roof” during refinance inspection.
Even if damaged.
He wanted valuation before tear-off revealed structural problems.
More concealment.
Then the engineer estimated rear roof deck replacement added $19,000 beyond original budget.
Jenna’s reimbursement interest increased under contract.
Eric exploded.
“You’re stealing equity!”
“No,” Jenna said. “I’m paying to keep rain out.”
Then the appraiser’s old notes surfaced.
Eric had told him:
roof recently repaired.
False.
He was inflating value for the loan.
Again.
One lie supporting another.
Then Linda finally became frightened.
Not of Jenna.
Of Eric.
She asked Daniel privately:
“Can he lose his future share?”
Daniel answered:
“Not because he’s bad with money. Maybe creditors can reach it later depending on structure, but you cannot simply disinherit him under this trust.”
Linda looked almost relieved.
Then:
“Can I sell now?”
“Yes, with beneficiary and trustee process.”
She looked at Jenna.
Maybe the first crack.
The house that caused all this could be sold.
But Jenna asked:
“Do you want to?”
Linda stared at the dining room.
“No.”
Then why refinance it?
Because saving Eric felt more urgent than preserving herself.
That realization did not transform her.
Not yet.
Then Eric discovered Linda had met Daniel without him.
He called her a traitor.
Linda slapped him.
Not hard.
Enough.
Everyone froze.
Eric looked shocked.
Linda whispered:
“I gave you everything.”
Eric answered:
“Not everything.”
There.

That was the problem.
Nothing would ever be enough if rescue remained the system.
