Chapter 15 - ETHAN HEALS

Ethan’s rib healed.

That happened quietly.

No dramatic procedure.

No surgery.

Time.

Careful handling.

Pain control.

By three months, he stopped screaming when lifted.

Jonathan noticed one morning and cried.

Nina laughed through tears.

“He’s just annoyed now.”

Ethan had developed a new cry.

Hungry.

Indignant.

Entirely ordinary.

Jonathan never thought ordinary could sound so beautiful.

The pediatric orthopedist concluded the fracture was most consistent with older trauma and could plausibly have resulted from neonatal resuscitation.

Could.

Not proven beyond doubt.

But enough that Jonathan stopped seeing Nina’s fingers when he remembered the scream.

He saw the birth room instead.

A place he had not been allowed inside.

A place where his son fought to breathe and no one told him the full story.

Jonathan told Nina:

“You saved him weeks of pain.”

She shook her head.

“I found where it hurt.”

“That matters.”

Nina looked at Ethan.

“Someone should have done it sooner.”

May you like

Yes.

That sentence belonged to the whole story.
