Chapter 16 - THE DOCTOR WHO LEFT

Caleb Ross returned to St. Matthew for the first time in four years to testify.

He looked terrified entering the courthouse.

Jonathan felt no sympathy initially.

Then Ross said something unexpected before deposition resumed.

“I became a rural emergency physician because of Laura.”

Jonathan stared.

“What?”

“I left obstetrics.”

“Because you killed my wife?”

Ross flinched.

“No.”

Jonathan regretted the cruelty immediately.

Ross continued.

“Because I realized I could be trained to obey hierarchy more easily than I could be trained to trust my own concern.”

He had spent years replaying the case.

The difficult extraction.

The bleeding.

Voss arriving.

The note change.

Teresa’s argument.

Laura’s death.

He did not ask for forgiveness.

Good.

He testified that Voss instructed him to revise attending-presence language.

Voss denied using the word revise.

Said clarify.

Another semantic war.

Then Ross produced an old text message he had never deleted.

Voss, morning after Laura died:

Keep your note clean. Nothing about delay adds clinical value now.

There.

Not a confession.

A mindset.

May you like

Nothing about delay adds clinical value now.

To Jonathan, delay was the entire missing universe.
