Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK WITH GRANT’S FACEThe man at Matteo’s apartment looked enough like Grant to trigger Clara’s body before her mind understood.

Same height.

Same gray suit.

Same haircut.

Same habit of carrying car keys in his right hand.

But he was not Grant.

His name was Jason Pike.

An actor.

A former police training contractor.

He had been paid through Continuum to recreate Grant’s approach pattern.

Matteo opened the apartment door and froze.

Jason said the line.

“You’re coming home with me.”

Not to Matteo.

To Clara’s recorded voice playing from a speaker in the hallway.

The trap was designed for one purpose.

Measure Matteo.

Would he strike?

Threaten?

Call old Moretti men?

Use unlawful force?

The program had assumed Clara would be present.

She was not.

Matteo stared at Jason.

Then at the camera hidden in the smoke detector.

He closed the door.

Called police.

Called Lucia.

Called the commission.

No confrontation.

No private interrogation.

No threat.

The test failed before it began.

Or so they thought.

Jason surrendered.

He claimed he believed the scenario was lawful research involving consenting adults.

His contract described Matteo as a voluntary reentry participant.

Matteo read the signature page.

His old prison authorization.

Again.

Continuum could manufacture consent from a document no ordinary person would understand as permission for this.

The commission raided Oakridge.

The facility was no longer abandoned.

Fresh paint.

New staff.

Valid animal-research licenses.

Valid workforce-training grants.

Valid family-counseling contracts.

Every room looked legal until investigators opened the basement.

There were replicas.

A Moretti laundry room.

A suburban kitchen.

A child’s classroom.

A hospital waiting area.

A family-court interview room.

A prison visitation booth.

Each space contained sensors designed to measure voice, posture, heart rate, movement, animal stress, and decision timing.

The Moretti laundry-room replica stopped Clara in the doorway.

A metal bucket sat beside the washing machine.

A damaged leather lead lay on the floor.

A black dog mannequin stood beside it.

On the wall:

SCENARIO 14A — PROTECTIVE CLAIM RESPONSE

Possible male responses:

Threaten intruder.

Remove woman.

Assert relationship.

Defer to subject preference.

Matteo stared at option three.

Assert relationship.

“My bride.”

The words he believed he invented in one second of anger had been anticipated as a category.

Not the exact sentence.

The behavior.

Claim a relationship to establish protection.

Clara looked at him.

“Does that change what happened?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I hate that they understood the worst part of me before I did.”

She waited.

He continued.

“I claimed you because I thought ownership would frighten Grant more than your refusal.”

“Yes.”

“I would not do that now.”

“No.”

They had reached this question before.

If the beginning was arranged, was the love real?

Now the system offered a crueler version.

If the harmful part was predicted, did the growth count?

Clara touched the edge of the metal bucket.

“Prediction is not authorship.”

Leo’s question returned to her.

This time she needed the answer too.

Investigators opened Oakridge’s classroom simulation.

Emilia’s school layout appeared on the monitors.

A lockdown exercise was scheduled for Friday.

Not a real attack.

A false security alert.

The plan would place Emilia in a room with two exits.

One led toward a teacher.

One toward a frightened younger child.

Continuum intended to score whether Emilia followed authority or broke procedure to help someone.

Clara’s stomach turned.

“She is eight.”

The operator had already seeded the test into the school’s emergency contractor.

The school canceled every drill.

Parents were informed.

Police reviewed security.

Teachers told students there would be no exercise.

Friday arrived.

At 10:14 a.m., the fire alarm sounded anyway.

Then the lockdown system activated.

Two contradictory instructions.

Children began crying.

Someone had bypassed the canceled schedule.

Clara was at the commission office.

Matteo was at the restitution center.

Neither rushed into the school.

Every instinct told them to.

They did not interfere with trained responders.

The school principal initiated evacuation.

Dana reached Emilia’s advocate line.

Inside the classroom, Emilia stood between two doors.

Exactly as the simulation predicted.

A first grader had frozen under a desk.

Her teacher ordered everyone toward the hall.

Emilia looked at the child.

Then at the teacher.

“Can we take her?”

The teacher said yes.

No rebellion.

No abandonment.

No forced binary choice.

The teacher crossed the room and picked up the younger girl.

Everyone left together.

Continuum’s model had offered two doors.

A child asked for a third answer.

Police arrested the contractor who triggered the system.

He carried a Continuum phone.

On its screen:

SUBJECT RESPONSE: UNCLASSIFIED.

Then another line appeared.

PARENTAL RESPONSE: BOTH REMAINED OUTSIDE PER PROCEDURE.
